Harris Maintains Narrow 45%-42% Lead Over Trump in Tight U.S. Presidential Race, Reuters/Ipsos Poll Shows

Harris appears to be gaining support due to her perceived strengths in healthcare policy and her ability to handle political extremism.

Washington: Vice President Kamala Harris holds a slim 3-point lead over former President Donald Trump—45% to 42%—as the U.S. presidential race intensifies ahead of the November 5 election, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll. The survey indicates a close contest between the Democratic and Republican candidates, with Harris also leading among likely voters, 47% to 44%. The poll has a margin of error of approximately 4 percentage points.

The race remains tight, with little change from a similar Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted a week earlier. However, this latest poll, which concluded on Sunday, suggests increased voter enthusiasm, particularly among Democrats, compared to the lead-up to the November 2020 election, when Joe Biden secured victory over Trump.

According to the poll, 78% of registered voters—86% of Democrats and 81% of Republicans—are “completely certain” they will vote in the upcoming election. This marks an increase in voter commitment compared to a similar Reuters/Ipsos poll taken in late October 2020, when 74% of respondents, including 74% of Democrats and 79% of Republicans, expressed certainty about casting their ballots.

Harris appears to be gaining support due to her perceived strengths in healthcare policy and her ability to handle political extremism. However, voters view the U.S. economy as the most critical issue, with Trump being rated as the better candidate to manage the nation’s economic affairs, according to the poll.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll surveyed 938 U.S. adults online, including 807 registered voters. Of these, 769 were identified as the most likely to vote on Election Day.
