Aryna Sabalenka Secures Third Consecutive Wuhan Open Title with Victory Over Zheng Qinwen

Sabalenka overcame former U.S. Open champion Coco Gauff in the semi-finals, delivering a dominant performance with seven aces and 32 winners in the final.

Top seed Aryna Sabalenka claimed her third straight Wuhan Open title on Sunday, defeating China’s fifth seed Zheng Qinwen in a thrilling 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 final. The Belarusian star, who ousted Coco Gauff in the semi-finals, dominated the opening set without facing a break point and fired seven aces among her 32 winners.

Sabalenka, now with the most aces in WTA-1000 events this season, encountered a challenge in the second set from Zheng, who was aiming to become the second Chinese player to win a WTA-1000 title. However, Sabalenka took control in the decider, securing a double break to establish a 3-0 lead. She ultimately clinched the victory on her third championship point, earning her fourth title of the year and her 17th overall.

Reflecting on her unprecedented achievement, Sabalenka, 26, said, “Winning three in a row here is crazy, and Wuhan really feels like home.” She also commended Zheng’s impressive performance, adding, “I’m sure we’ll play many more finals together.”

With her victory, Sabalenka strengthens her push to reclaim the world No. 1 ranking ahead of the season-ending WTA Finals, where she’ll compete alongside current No. 1 Iga Swiatek.
