Shanghai: Typhoon Bebinca struck Shanghai on Monday morning as a Category 1 storm, marking the most powerful tropical cyclone to hit the city directly in over seven decades. With maximum wind speeds reaching 151 kph (94 mph) near its center, the storm made landfall in the bustling metropolis of nearly 25 million people at around 7:30 a.m. (2330 GMT), according to state media. This is the strongest storm to impact Shanghai since Typhoon Gloria in 1949.
Shanghai, a city that typically avoids the brunt of strong typhoons, generally experiences storms that make landfall further south. Just last week, Typhoon Yagi, a Category 4 storm, caused significant destruction as it passed over southern Hainan province.

The impact of Typhoon Bebinca has been far-reaching. Hundreds of flights were canceled at Shanghai’s two airports starting Sunday night. In addition, Shanghai railway station suspended some rail services, causing widespread travel disruptions during China’s three-day Mid-Autumn Festival public holiday. The holiday, typically a time for family gatherings and travel, has been significantly affected by the storm.

Major resorts in the city, including Shanghai Disney Resort, Jinjiang Amusement Park, and Shanghai Wild Animal Park, have temporarily closed in response to the storm. Several ferry services have also been halted to ensure public safety. These measures highlight the extensive precautions taken by the city to mitigate the effects of this rare and powerful typhoon.
