British PM Accused of Breaching Parliamentary Rules Over Clothing Donations to Wife

London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under scrutiny for allegedly breaching parliamentary rules by not declaring that a wealthy businessman and Labour Party donor provided high-end clothing for his wife, Victoria. The Sunday Times reported that Waheed Alli, a significant donor to the Labour Party, covered the cost of a personal shopper, clothing, and alterations for Victoria Starmer.

According to the report, Starmer, who has been in power since July, now faces an investigation for “neglecting to disclose” these donations. While Starmer’s financial interests registered on the parliament’s website include several donations from Alli—such as glasses, work clothes, and accommodation—the gifts for his wife were not declared. The Sunday Times highlighted that while other donations were properly declared, the omission of the clothing gifts for Victoria Starmer could constitute a breach of the House of Commons code of conduct.

A spokesperson for 10 Downing Street responded to these allegations, stating, “Starmer and his team had sought advice from authorities on coming to office, and believed they had been compliant. However, following further interrogation this month, we’ve declared further items.” This statement suggests that additional items have been declared in light of the investigation.
