New Delhi: National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is set to visit Russia this week to participate in a BRICS (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) national security advisors’ meeting, amidst ongoing discussions about India’s potential role in resolving the Ukraine conflict. Doval’s visit follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent trips to Moscow and Kyiv.
The BRICS conclave, which Doval is attending, aims to address global security issues and is taking place as efforts intensify to negotiate peace between Moscow and Kyiv. In addition to the BRICS meeting, Doval is expected to engage in discussions with his Russian counterpart, focusing on potential avenues for peace in the region.
Doval’s trip to Russia comes shortly after Prime Minister Modi’s high-profile visit to Kyiv on August 23. During that visit, Modi emphasized the need for direct talks between Ukraine and Russia to end the conflict and expressed India’s willingness to play an “active role” in fostering peace. Modi’s visit marked the first by an Indian prime minister to Ukraine since its independence in 1991 and followed his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

In a recent statement at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that India, Brazil, and China could serve as intermediaries in resolving the conflict. Putin highlighted the trust and confidence between these nations and expressed optimism about their potential contributions to peace efforts.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, after discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, also noted that India and China could play a significant role in addressing the ongoing conflict.

India has consistently advocated for resolving the Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy, underscoring its commitment to peace in the region.
