Sofia/Cairo: Egypt has decided to purchase two Lockheed C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, snubbing Russia’s offer of the Il-76, according to reports from Bulgarian Military. This decision was made public during the Egypt International Air Show, which concluded on September 5 in El Alamein.
Familiarity with American Aircraft
The Lockheed C-130J Super Hercules is the latest version of the Hercules transport aircraft, a reliable military workhorse since its introduction in 1956. Known for its versatility, durability, and global adoption by military forces, the C-130J has proven to be an indispensable asset. Since entering service in 1999, the C-130J has undergone several modifications to enhance its operational capabilities.
Egypt’s choice to acquire more C-130Js reflects its operational familiarity with American military hardware. The Egyptian Air Force already operates C-130J-30 Super Hercules aircraft, streamlining the integration of these additional units into its fleet.

Strengthening U.S.-Egypt Military Ties
This decision not only simplifies pilot training and maintenance but also strengthens Egypt’s strategic ties with the United States. By enhancing military collaboration, Egypt’s choice solidifies ongoing U.S.-Egyptian defense cooperation.
Equipped with four Rolls-Royce AE 2100 D3 engines, the C-130J reaches a maximum speed of 410 knots (about 660 kilometers per hour) and can travel up to 2,000 nautical miles (3,800 kilometers). The aircraft is nearly 100 feet long, with a wingspan of over 130 feet and a height of about 39 feet.
