Mudslide in Phuket Claims 13 Lives, Including Two Russians

BANGKOK – A devastating mudslide on the Thai resort island of Phuket has claimed the lives of 13 people, including a Russian couple, authorities confirmed on Sunday. The incident occurred near the popular tourist destination of the Big Buddha, following heavy rains that triggered the landslide.

Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat reported that among the victims, nine were migrant workers from Myanmar, two were Thai nationals, and the remaining two were Russians. Approximately 20 people sustained injuries, and 209 households were impacted by the disaster. A major cleanup operation is currently underway.

The search for missing persons, which included two Russians, two Thais, and nine Myanmar nationals, has been called off. Autopsies are being conducted to confirm the identities of the victims.

In response to the tragedy, Deputy Interior Minister Chada Thaiseth visited Phuket province to provide support to officials and the affected families. He distributed supplies at Wat Kittisangkharam and instructed relevant agencies to investigate the cause of the mudslide and expedite assistance to those impacted.

Authorities are also working to contact the relatives and embassies of the deceased.
