Three Killed in Fatal Shooting at Bosnian School in Sanski Most

The school was still closed for summer holidays, so no children were present during the attack.

Sarajevo: Three staff members were killed at a high school in the western Bosnian town of Sanski Most on Wednesday when a school employee opened fire before attempting to take his own life, police reported.

The incident occurred at around 10:15 A.M. (0815 GMT), when the shooter, armed with an automatic rifle, targeted the school. According to Adnan Beganovic, police spokesman for the Una-Sana canton, the deceased included the school dean, the secretary, and a teacher.

“He tried to commit suicide and was gravely injured,” Beganovic said, noting that the shooter was transported to the nearby town of Banja Luka for emergency treatment. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.

The school was still closed for summer holidays, so no children were present during the attack. N1 TV reported, citing witnesses, that the shooter was a janitor with a history of conflicts with the school’s management and was under disciplinary proceedings. The report indicated that the janitor targeted specific individuals. Reuters has not yet verified this account.

Mass shootings are relatively rare in the Western Balkans, where private weapon ownership remains high due to the legacy of the 1990s conflicts. In July, a similar incident occurred in neighboring Croatia, where a war veteran shot five people, including his mother, at a nursing home and injured six others.
