Dhaka: Bangladesh’s Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan and the Governor of the Central Bank, Abdur Rouf Talukder, have both tendered their resignations, according to officials on Saturday. These resignations come in the wake of widespread student protests that have escalated into demands for accountability from officials appointed during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s tenure.
Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan resigned after receiving warnings from students about “dire consequences” if he did not step down. A law ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the resignation, but Reuters was unable to reach Hassan for comment.
Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder has also submitted his resignation. However, Salehuddin Ahmed, an adviser to the finance ministry, stated that Talukder’s resignation has not yet been accepted due to the critical nature of his position. According to a Reuters report, they were unable to contact Talukder.
