Ukraine’s Air Defense Shoots Down Russian Missiles and Drones Amid Overnight Attack

The Ukrainian air force reported that Russia had launched a total of four Iskander-M or KN-23 ballistic missiles but did not specify the fate of the two missiles that were not intercepted.

Kyiv: Ukraine’s air defense successfully intercepted and shot down two Iskander-M or KN-23 ballistic missiles, two Kh-59 cruise missiles, and 15 attack drones launched by Russia overnight. The announcement was made on Tuesday via the Telegram messaging app.

Late Monday, several explosions were heard in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, following an air raid siren, according to Reuters witnesses. However, authorities confirmed that air defense units intercepted the incoming missiles.

The Ukrainian air force reported that Russia had launched a total of four Iskander-M or KN-23 ballistic missiles but did not specify the fate of the two missiles that were not intercepted.

Kyiv regional governor Ruslan Kravchenko stated there were no direct hits on residential or critical infrastructure. He noted that debris from the interceptions damaged windows in an apartment building, an office building, and two gas stations in the region.

Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv’s military authorities, mentioned that preliminary reports indicated no damage or casualties. Ukrainian air defense units were active in both the city and the surrounding Kyiv region, as confirmed by statements on the Telegram messaging app.

In the southern region of Mykolaiv, the governor reported that the air force destroyed 13 Shahed drones over his region. The attack resulted in three fires, which have since been extinguished. Additionally, the attack caused damage to three residential buildings, a recreation center, and a utility building.
