EAM Jaishankar Warns India to Prepare for ‘Disruptive’ Changes in the Indian Ocean

Jaishankar acknowledged the challenges in India's neighbor relationships but emphasized India's distinct advantages.

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has called for India to brace itself for significant disruptions in the Indian Ocean. Addressing a think-tank session, Jaishankar highlighted the rising competition in India’s neighborhood, which he predicts will soon extend into the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

Jaishankar voiced concerns about China’s expanding maritime presence in the IOR. Although he did not specify any countries, he underscored that the competitive dynamics observed around India’s borders are expected to replicate in the Indian Ocean.

“There is no point moaning and groaning about it,” Jaishankar remarked. “India needs to compete, and that’s what we are trying to do.” He emphasized the importance of anticipating and preparing for these imminent changes.

“The Indian Ocean is already witnessing the beginnings of a maritime presence that was previously absent,” Dr. Jaishankar noted. “It is poised for a disruptive change. We need to anticipate it and prepare for it.”

Jaishankar also acknowledged the complexities of India’s relationships with its neighbors, stating that while these relationships are challenging, India has distinct advantages. “Given our history, the size of our neighbors, and the sociology of both sides, managing these relationships is not easy. These are realities we must accept. However, we must also recognize that we have more resources and capabilities today,” Dr. Jaishankar concluded.
