Xi Jinping Calls for Urgent Rescue Operations After Highway Bridge Collapse in Shaanxi

12 dead, 31 people missing in this tragic incident

Beijing: President Xi Jinping has called for comprehensive rescue operations following the collapse of a highway bridge in Shaanxi province, northwest China, which resulted in the death of 12 people, according to state media reports on Saturday.

The bridge collapsed at 8:40 p.m. (1240 GMT) on Friday in Shangluo city due to a flash flood, causing several vehicles to plunge into the river. By 10 a.m. on Saturday, it was confirmed that five vehicles had fallen into the water, with 31individuals reported missing.

In response to the tragedy, Xi Jinping emphasized that China is in a crucial period for flood control and stressed the importance of local governments in enhancing monitoring and early warning systems.

The national fire and rescue authority has mobilized a substantial team for the recovery effort. As of Saturday, the rescue operation includes 859 personnel, 90 vehicles, 20 boats, and 41 drones.
