Belarus Proposes ‘Solutions’ for German Citizen on Death Row, Reports Say

The German foreign ministry confirmed the sentencing but did not disclose the individual's identity.

Minsk: Diplomats from Germany and Belarus have been engaged in discussions regarding the fate of a German national sentenced to death in Belarus. According to news agencies on Saturday, Minsk has proposed several “solutions” in response to the situation, as reported by the Belarusian foreign ministry.

Belarusian human rights organization Viasna revealed on Friday that a German national, identified as Rico Krieger, had been sentenced to death in Belarus on charges related to terrorism and mercenary activities. The German foreign ministry confirmed the sentencing but did not disclose the individual’s identity.

Belarusian foreign ministry spokesperson Anatoly Glaz stated, “Taking into account the request of the German foreign ministry, Belarus proposed concrete solutions on the available options.” He also noted that Belarus, a close ally of Russia, had granted consular access to the individual.

Viasna reported that Krieger had been in custody since November 2023 and was convicted on June 24. The German foreign ministry has not yet provided additional comments on the matter.
