Shannen Doherty, Iconic Star of ‘90210’ and ‘Charmed’, Passes Away at 53

Los Angeles: American actress Shannen Doherty, renowned for her role as Brenda Walsh on the iconic 1990s TV series “Beverly Hills, 90210”, has passed away at the age of 53 after a long battle with cancer, as reported by People magazine on Sunday.

“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease,” said Doherty’s publicist Leslie Sloane, according to People magazine.

Doherty had been open about her struggles with cancer, first revealing her breast cancer diagnosis in 2015. In 2023, she underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor and disclosed that the cancer had metastasized to her bones.

Starting her career as a child actor, Doherty gained widespread fame for her portrayal of Brenda Walsh, a Minnesota transplant navigating life in Beverly Hills. Her character became central to the show’s narrative, notably in a love triangle with Dylan McKay (Luke Perry) and Kelly Taylor (Jennie Garth). Doherty departed “90210” during its fourth season in 1994, amidst reported conflicts with castmates.

In 1998, Doherty found success in the supernatural series “Charmed”, playing Prue Halliwell, the eldest of three magical sisters. Despite the show’s popularity, behind-the-scenes tensions were often reported.

Described by People magazine as the ‘bad girl’ of the nineties, Doherty was known for her rebellious reputation, which included late arrivals on set and clashes with colleagues. Reflecting on her past behavior on the podcast “Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty” in 2023, she acknowledged personal growth and the importance of diplomacy in professional interactions.

Throughout her career, Doherty revisited her role as Brenda Walsh in “90210” reboots and reconciled with former co-star Jennie Garth later in life.

Doherty was married three times, most recently to photographer Kurt Iswarienko, with whom she filed for divorce in 2023.
