Paris: French Sports Minister Amelie Oudea Castera made a splash on Saturday by swimming in the River Seine, a symbolic gesture aimed at showcasing the river’s cleanliness and readiness to host swimming events during the upcoming Olympic Games.

Oudea Castera’s swim near the Alexandre III and Invalides bridges was captured by BFM TV, highlighting efforts to ensure the Seine is fit for hosting the triathlon and marathon swimming events scheduled from July 26 to Aug. 11. The river famously featured in the 1900 Paris Olympics.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, a key advocate for cleaning up the historically polluted Seine ahead of the games, has pledged to follow suit and swim in the river to commemorate Paris hosting the Olympics and to demonstrate its suitability for aquatic sports.
