Deadly Suicide Bombings in Borno, Nigeria Leave 18 Dead, 30 Injured

Maiduguri: At least 18 individuals lost their lives, and 30 others sustained injuries in a series of attacks allegedly perpetrated by female suicide bombers in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno state on Saturday, as reported by the head of the local state emergency management agency.

Borno remains a focal point of a 15-year Islamist insurgency, which has resulted in numerous casualties and displaced millions. Despite the Nigerian military’s efforts to diminish militant capabilities, they continue to launch deadly assaults targeting civilians and security installations.

Barkindo Saidu, Director General of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, disclosed that suspected suicide bombers carried out separate attacks at a wedding, funeral, and hospital in the town of Gwoza, resulting in fatalities and injuries. Saidu confirmed a total of 18 deaths, including children, adults, and pregnant women, with injuries ranging from abdominal ruptures to skull and limb fractures.

No entity has claimed responsibility for the attacks thus far, and Borno state police were not immediately available for comment.

Boko Haram and its splinter group, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), remain the most active militant factions in Borno, a vast rural expanse equivalent in size to Ireland.
