Indians Cope with Extreme Heat: Rush for Air Conditioners and Beer

Leading beer makers like Carlsberg, Anheuser-Busch InBev, and United Breweries are benefiting from consumers seeking refreshment without excessive alcohol consumption in the scorching weather.

New Delhi: Demand for beer and air conditioners in India has surged amidst record-breaking heat, providing a boon for consumer businesses as temperatures soar to nearly 50 degrees Celsius in Delhi and Rajasthan. Climate scientists attribute this intense summer to human-induced climate change, intensifying the seasonal heatwave.

Vinod Giri from the Brewers’ Association of India reports a 10% increase in beer sales volume this summer, marking the highest demand since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Leading beer makers like Carlsberg, Anheuser-Busch InBev, and United Breweries are benefiting from consumers seeking refreshment without excessive alcohol consumption in the scorching weather.

Meanwhile, B. Thiagarajan, managing director of Blue Star, notes unprecedented air conditioner sales, describing it as a “mad rush” with a significant spike in demand unmatched in his three decades in the industry. He predicts a 50% growth in AC sales during the April-June period, far exceeding the industry’s anticipated 25% to 30% rise.

Beyond beverages and cooling appliances, other sectors are also experiencing heightened activity. Swiggy Instamart reports a surge in orders for ice cream and cold beverages, while Flipkart notes a 40% increase in top-end sunscreen sales, driven by the need for sun protection during prolonged exposure to extreme heat.

However, logistical challenges loom large as the heatwave takes a toll on delivery workers, affecting operations for companies like Flipkart and Mamaearth, according to Ajay Rao, CEO of Emiza logistics.

Despite the challenges, the intense heat continues to reshape consumer behavior and drive economic activity across India.
