New York: The United States has proposed a collaborative effort with India to co-produce its renowned Javelin anti-tank missiles, responding to the Indian Army’s urgent need for these advanced weapon systems.
Top defense sources disclosed to India Today that this proposition was raised during a recent high-level meeting between the two nations. The offer includes joint production of both the Javelin missiles and their launchers within India, in partnership with an Indian entity to be selected as discussions progress.
India has been grappling with the challenge of acquiring shoulder-fired anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) for over a decade, with limited success. During periods of urgency, such as the initial phases of the ongoing conflict with China, the Indian Army resorted to emergency procurements, securing Spike ATGMs from Israel.
Concurrently, efforts are underway domestically to develop indigenous ATGMs through the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with industrial partners. Recent trials have demonstrated promising results, indicating progress in this critical defense capability.

The Indian Army’s specific requirement includes a lightweight, portable ATGM suitable for deployment in rugged terrains, such as the hilly regions prevalent along India’s borders.
While discussions between the US and India have explored joint production opportunities for various weapon systems, significant breakthroughs in this realm have remained elusive thus far.
