White House Affirms Ukraine Must Defeat Russia for NATO Membership

Kirby underscored President Joe Biden's belief that NATO membership lies in Ukraine's future.

Washington: The Biden administration has reiterated its stance that Ukraine must achieve victory in its conflict with Russia before it can become a member of NATO. John Kirby, the coordinator of strategic communications for the National Security Council at the White House, confirmed this during a recent briefing.

Kirby underscored President Joe Biden’s belief that NATO membership lies in Ukraine’s future. However, he emphasized that Ukraine, like all aspiring members, must meet specific criteria before accession.

“NATO and the United States have stated that Ukraine must first win this war in order to join NATO, and we are doing everything possible to support that,” Kirby stated during the briefing, according to Kyiv Independent.

Enduring Support

Kirby also acknowledged that regardless of the conflict’s outcome, Ukraine will continue to face security challenges from its extensive border with Russia.

In response, President Biden signed a bilateral security agreement during the G7 summit, ensuring sustained assistance to Ukraine’s military and defense requirements, bolstered by United States support.

Road to NATO Membership

Washington has affirmed its dedication to closely collaborating with Kyiv throughout the NATO accession process.

Secretary of State Anthony Blinken highlighted that the upcoming NATO summit in Washington aims to lay the groundwork for Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance.

The Ukrainian government has expressed confidence that decisions made at the NATO summit will reaffirm unwavering support for Ukraine’s eventual integration into the alliance.
