New Criminal Laws Effective July 1, 2024: Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal

The Parliament passed these three new laws last year, and they received President Droupadi Murmu's assent in December 2023.

New Delhi: Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, announced that the new Criminal Laws will replace the Indian Penal Code 1860, the Indian Evidence Act 1872, and the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973 starting from July 1, 2024.

“From July 1, all three laws, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Act will replace the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act. Looking at the current situation, there are many innovative ideas in these three laws,” Meghwal stated, as reported by the news agencies – PTI and ANI.

Meghwal emphasized the ongoing training initiatives by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD), adding, “Our judicial academies, national law universities are also providing training for the same. Everything is going hand in hand and from July 1, all these three laws which is crucial for criminal justice system will be implemented in the country.”

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, a part of these legislative changes, will expand the scope of offences to include acts such as secession, armed rebellion, subversive activities, separatist movements, or actions endangering national sovereignty or unity, redefining the sedition law.
