Heather Wells, a 34-year-old passenger aboard an American Airlines flight from Dallas to Charlotte, NC, is facing legal action from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) following a disruptive incident in 2021.
Wells allegedly attempted to open an aircraft door mid-flight, prompting flight attendants and a fellow passenger to intervene. She was subdued using duct tape after reportedly exhibiting aggressive behaviour, including kicking, spitting, and attempting to head-butt others on board.
According to reports, the disruption occurred shortly after Wells consumed alcohol on the flight, leading to her erratic behaviour and profane outbursts. The FAA imposed a hefty fine of $81,950 on Wells in 2022 for the incident, which remains unpaid.
US attorney Jaime Esparza has initiated legal proceedings on behalf of the FAA to recover the outstanding fines from Wells. The lawsuit seeks to compel Wells to fulfil her financial obligations resulting from the FAA’s penalty.
The incident underscores ongoing efforts by aviation authorities to maintain safety and enforce strict regulations concerning in-flight disturbances. Wells’ case serves as a reminder of the serious consequences passengers may face for disruptive behaviour aboard aircraft.
