Jakarta: Indonesia’s communications minister has warned of potential shutdown for social media platform X if it fails to comply with regulations prohibiting adult content. The country, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, strictly prohibits online sharing of content deemed obscene.
Minister Budi Arie Setiadi informed international news agency Reuters that he has issued a warning letter to X regarding this issue. “We will certainly shut its services down,” he stated, citing Indonesia’s electronic information and transaction (ITE) law, which carries severe penalties including up to six years in prison for disseminating pornographic material.
Setiadi’s remarks come in response to X’s recent policy update allowing consensually produced adult content. Despite the warning, X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, has not yet responded to Indonesia’s communication. Setiadi indicated that the government plans to send additional letters before making a final decision on potential closure.
