NBA Icon Jerry West Passes Away at 86

Renowned as "The Logo", West's silhouette during a Lakers game served as the inspiration for the NBA's emblematic symbol.

New York: Jerry West, revered as one of the NBA’s all-time greats and the iconic figure behind the league’s emblematic logo, has died at the age of 86, as announced by the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Clippers conveyed that West peacefully passed away Wednesday morning, surrounded by his wife Karen.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver paid tribute to West’s monumental legacy in a statement, stating, “Jerry West was a basketball genius and a defining figure in our league for more than 60 years. He distinguished himself not only as an NBA champion and an All-Star in all 14 of his playing seasons but also as a consummate competitor who embraced the biggest moments.”

Silver continued, “He helped build eight championship teams during his tenure in the NBA – a legacy of achievement that mirrors his on-court excellence. And he will be enshrined this October into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor, becoming the first person ever inducted as both a player and a contributor.”

He added, “On behalf of the NBA, we send our deepest condolences to Jerry’s wife, Karen, his family, and his many friends in the NBA community.”

Known affectionately as “Mr. Clutch”, West was drafted by the Minneapolis Lakers in 1960 before the franchise moved to Los Angeles. His illustrious playing career spanned until 1974, during which he earned 14 NBA All-Star selections and led his team to the NBA Finals nine times.

West’s impact extended beyond the court; he served as a co-captain on the US Olympic basketball team, securing a gold medal in 1960. Transitioning to coaching, West guided the Lakers for three seasons before assuming roles in scouting and the front office.

Throughout his tenure, West played pivotal roles in shaping championship teams, notably during the “Showtime” Lakers era and the subsequent resurgence with Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant.

Renowned as “The Logo”, West’s silhouette during a Lakers game served as the inspiration for the NBA’s emblematic symbol. Although never formally acknowledged by the league, designer Alan Siegel drew inspiration from West’s flawless dribbling form, creating an enduring legacy.

West’s profound influence on basketball spans generations, with broadcaster Stephen A. Smith remarking, “He was relevant to the game of basketball literally from the ’60s until he passed away in his sleep last night.”
