US Pushes UN Security Council for Gaza Ceasefire Support

Recent clashes in Gaza, including an Israeli military operation to rescue hostages held by Hamas, have heightened security risks for aid workers and facilities.

The United States has urged the United Nations Security Council to convene for a crucial vote on endorsing a proposed ceasefire initiative for Gaza. The draft resolution, championed by the US, advocates for an “immediate ceasefire with the release of hostages” to quell escalating tensions between Israel and Hamas.

Nate Evans, spokesperson for the US delegation, affirmed the urgency of the situation, stating, “Today, the United States called for the Security Council to move towards a vote… supporting the proposal on the table.” However, no specific date for the vote was disclosed.

In response to escalating violence in Gaza, the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has announced a temporary suspension of humanitarian aid distribution from an American-built pier off the coast. This decision comes amidst heightened safety concerns following recent deadly clashes in the region.

Cindy McCain, director of the WFP, revealed that Saturday witnessed a complex series of events, including an Israeli military operation that secured the release of four hostages held by Hamas. However, the operation was marred by intense fighting, and two WFP warehouses in Gaza were reportedly targeted by rocket attacks, resulting in the injury of a staff member.

The suspension of aid distribution from the US-operated pier marks a setback for efforts to alleviate the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. The pause, described by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) as a precautionary measure, allows for a comprehensive security review by humanitarian organizations operating in the area.
