US Military Confirms Houthi Missile Strikes on Commercial Ships in Gulf of Aden

The Tavvishi, a Liberian-flagged and Swiss-owned container ship, and the Norderney, a German-owned cargo ship flying Antigua and Barbados flags, were both struck by missiles. The Tavvishi sustained damage, while the Norderney was also hit but continued its journey without injuries to the crew.

LOS ANGELES: In the latest escalation of maritime tensions, Yemen’s Houthi rebels have targeted two commercial vessels in missile attacks within the Gulf of Aden, reports US Central Command. According to CENTCOM, the Iran-backed Houthi militia launched an anti-ship ballistic missile at the Tavvishi, a Liberian-flagged and Swiss-owned container ship. The vessel sustained damage, although no crew members were harmed in the incident.

Additionally, two missiles fired by the Houthis struck the Norderney, a German-owned cargo ship operating under Antigua and Barbados flags. While the vessel suffered damage, no injuries were reported among the crew, allowing the ship to proceed with its journey.

Earlier claims by the Houthis asserted their responsibility for targeting both the Tavvishi and Norderney, with assertions of setting the latter ablaze.

MSC Ship Management, overseeing the Tavvishi according to LSEG data, and Sunship Schiffahrtskontor, managing the Norderney, have yet to respond to requests for comment, Reuters reports.

In response to the attacks, CENTCOM disclosed its forces’ actions in neutralizing an uncrewed aerial system over the Gulf of Aden, along with destroying two land attack cruise missiles and one missile launcher situated in Houthi-controlled regions of Yemen.
