Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal Surrenders at Tihar Jail, Sentenced to Judicial Custody till June 5 in Excise Policy Scam Case

Before surrendering, Kejriwal visited the Hanuman temple in Connaught Place to offer prayers, following a visit to Raj Ghat.

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal surrendered at Tihar jail in the national capital today (June 2) after his interim bail, granted by the Supreme Court in the excise policy-linked money laundering case, ended on June 1. The relief was initially provided to facilitate his campaigning in the Lok Sabha elections.

Before surrendering, Kejriwal visited the Hanuman temple in Connaught Place to offer prayers, following a visit to Raj Ghat. He then proceeded to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) office on Rouse Avenue Road, where he addressed party workers and leaders.

Accompanying Kejriwal were his wife Sunita Kejriwal, along with party leaders including Delhi ministers Atishi, Kailash Gahlot, and Saurabh Bharadwaj, Rajya Sabha MPs Sanjay Singh and Sandeep Pathak, and leaders Durgesh Pathak, Rakhi Birla, and Reena Gupta.

Judicial Custody Until June 5th

A Delhi court has ordered Arvind Kejriwal to judicial custody till June 5 (Wednesday) after noting that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had recently filed an application seeking his judicial custody. This application remained pending as he was on interim bail. Upon his surrender, the Duty Judge of Rouse Avenue Court processed the application and decided to detain him until June 5.

Released from Tihar Jail on May 10th

Delhi CM Kejriwal was released from prison on May 10 (Friday) on interim bail granted by the Supreme Court in connection with a money laundering case linked to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam, allowing him to campaign in the Lok Sabha polls. The bail expired on June 1 (Saturday), coinciding with the seventh and final phase of the general elections.

BJP Demonstrates at Raj Ghat in Delhi

Meanwhile, members of the Delhi BJP staged a protest outside Raj Ghat against Kejriwal, resulting in several party members being detained by the police.

In a Hindi post on X earlier in the day, Kejriwal stated, “On orders of the honorable Supreme Court, I came out from prison for election campaign for 21 days. Many thanks to the honorable Supreme Court.”

“Today I will go to Tihar and surrender. I will leave home at 3 pm. First, I will go to Raj Ghat and pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi. From there, I will go to Hanuman Temple in Connaught Place to seek blessings of Hanuman ji. And from there, I will go to the party office and meet with workers and party leaders. From there, I will leave for Tihar,” the chief minister said.

“All of you take care of yourselves. I will be worried about you. If you are happy then your Kejriwal will also be happy in jail. Jai Hind,” he added.
