Demonstrator Delays Scotland’s Women’s Euro 2025 Qualifier with Israel

Both the Glasgow fixture and the upcoming match in Hungary were planned without spectators due to the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, underscoring the sensitivity of hosting such events amid heightened tensions.

In a dramatic turn of events, the kickoff for Scotland’s Women’s Euro 2025 qualifier against Israel faced a significant delay in Glasgow on Friday. A demonstrator managed to breach security measures at Hampden Park, chaining themselves to a goalpost and halting proceedings for over half an hour.

Both the Glasgow fixture and the upcoming ‘return’ match in Hungary on June 4 were slated to occur behind closed doors, devoid of any spectators. This decision was made against the backdrop of the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, which has heightened tensions surrounding such events.

As pro-Palestinian protests unfolded outside Scotland’s national stadium, the demonstration inside the venue intensified just moments before the scheduled 1805 GMT kickoff. With a heavy chain around their neck and wearing a ‘Red Card For Israel’ T-shirt, the protester’s actions brought the match to a standstill. However, they were eventually removed, allowing the teams to proceed with their warm-up, and the game eventually commenced at 1836 GMT.

Outside the stadium, campaign groups like Scottish Friends of Palestine voiced their opposition to the Scottish Football Association’s decision to proceed with the match, accusing it of attempting to “sportswash” Israel’s actions.

The Scottish FA had previously explained their decision to hold the qualifier behind closed doors due to security concerns, citing updated intelligence and extensive consultations. Despite efforts to prevent disruptions, the breach highlights the challenges faced in ensuring the safety and smooth conduct of such events amidst heightened tensions.

Meanwhile, the ongoing Gaza war, sparked by Hamas’s attack on southern Israel, continues to exact a heavy toll. Casualty figures from both sides underscore the devastating human cost of the conflict, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence.

As the situation remains fluid, attention turns to the diplomatic and security measures needed to navigate these challenging times and ensure the safety of all involved.
