Powys, Wales: Maria Ressa, the esteemed journalist awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 for her unwavering advocacy of media freedom, has ignited controversy by labeling tech magnates such as Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk as “the largest dictators”. Ressa, known for her fearless stance against authoritarianism, asserts that these industry titans wield immense power comparable to traditional dictators, transcending geographical boundaries.
Speaking at the Hay Literary Festival in Powys, Ressa shed light on the pervasive influence of social media behemoths like Facebook and Twitter (rebranded as X). She underscored how these platforms, through algorithmic manipulation, shape users’ emotions and perceptions on a global scale. Despite cultural disparities, Ressa contends that individuals worldwide are susceptible to the same manipulative tactics orchestrated by tech conglomerates.
Ressa cited instances from the Philippines and the United States to illustrate the divisive impact of online discourse. She highlighted how identity politics discussions have been weaponized to foment discord, exploiting societal fault lines. Even movements like Black Lives Matter, Ressa noted, have fallen prey to external propaganda campaigns aimed at inciting unrest.

Expressing concern over the societal ramifications of unchecked tech influence, Ressa proposed two key solutions. Firstly, she advocated for the repeal of Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act, which shields internet companies from legal accountability for user-generated content. Additionally, she urged parents to monitor and limit their children’s exposure to social media platforms due to their addictive nature.
While acknowledging regulatory efforts targeting platforms like TikTok, Ressa cautioned against fixating solely on individual companies. Instead, she urged a holistic examination of social media’s pervasive impact. Ressa warned of the proliferation of low-quality content generated by artificial intelligence, further exacerbating the degradation of online information integrity.
