Algeria Proposes UN Resolution to Halt Violence in Gaza’s Rafah

Algeria's Ambassador to the UN, Amar Bendjama, emphasized the resolution's aim to halt the violence in Rafah following a closed-door meeting of the Security Council.

New York: Algeria has submitted a draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council, calling for urgent action to address the escalating violence in the Gaza Strip and particularly in Rafah. The proposal demands a ceasefire, the release of all hostages held by Hamas, and calls on Israel to immediately halt its military offensive in Rafah.

Algeria’s Ambassador to the UN, Amar Bendjama, emphasized the resolution’s aim to halt the violence in Rafah following a closed-door meeting of the Security Council. As a member of the council for the 2024/25 term, Algeria is pushing for decisive action to address the crisis.

The draft resolution, reviewed by the international new agency Reuters, employs strong language, directly instructing Israel to cease its military operations in Rafah. It also references a recent ruling by the International Court of Justice ordering Israel to halt its military assault on Rafah, a significant development stemming from South Africa’s accusation of genocide against Israel.

Diplomats anticipate a vote on the resolution within days, highlighting the urgency of the situation in Gaza following a recent attack that resulted in a tragic loss of life in Rafah. The attack, which occurred in a designated humanitarian zone, claimed the lives of at least 45 individuals. While Israel maintains it targeted Hamas militants and did not intend harm to civilians, the incident has sparked international outcry.

For a resolution to pass the Security Council, it requires at least nine votes in favor and no vetoes from permanent members, including the United States, Britain, France, Russia, or China. The United States, while traditionally shielding Israel from Security Council actions, has previously abstained from votes on Gaza-related resolutions, signaling a potential shift in its approach.

The current escalation in Gaza stems from heightened tensions following an attack by Hamas militants on October 7, resulting in significant casualties and hostages. Israel’s response, characterized by air, ground, and sea operations, has led to a devastating toll on Palestinian civilians, with thousands of lives lost and many more displaced.

As the situation in Gaza remains precarious, the proposed resolution represents a critical effort to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis and seek a pathway towards peace and stability in the region.
