Shark Encounter Forces Closure of Popular California Beach on Memorial Day

The closure was implemented immediately after the incident to ensure the safety of beachgoers. While the sandy shores remain open, water activities are suspended until Monday evening.

Calif (San Clemente): In a startling turn of events on Memorial Day weekend, a 2-mile stretch of one of Southern California’s beloved beaches has been closed following a harrowing encounter between a surfer and a shark.

The closure at San Clemente Beach was swiftly implemented after a surfer was abruptly knocked off his board by an aggressive shark on Sunday evening. Authorities were notified of the incident around 8 p.m., prompting immediate action to safeguard beachgoers.

According to Marine Safety Lt. Sean Staubenbaur, the surfer, fortunately unharmed, reported seeing a large, dark object approaching him before the unsettling collision occurred.

The closure, effective for 24 hours, comes as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of beach enthusiasts. While the sandy shores remain open to the public, water activities have been temporarily suspended until 8 p.m. on Monday.

The incident hasn’t dampened the spirits of locals and visitors celebrating the holiday weekend. Despite the setback, plans for a lemonade fundraiser by 6-year-old Waylon Andino remain intact. “It’s Memorial Day weekend, we’ll live it up and have fun with the kids regardless and enjoy each other’s company,” remarked Kylie Andino, Waylon’s mother, in an interview with the Register.

Under the closure protocols, any sighting of a shark measuring over 10 feet or displaying aggressive behavior triggers a 24-hour shutdown of the beach. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will reopen the waters once it’s deemed safe for swimmers and surfers alike.
