A massive fire engulfed the New Born Baby Care hospital in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar on Saturday night, claiming the lives of at least seven newborn babies. Officials confirmed that out of the 12 babies rescued from the inferno, six succumbed to injuries sustained during the blaze, while one had tragically passed away prior to the fire alert.
Amidst the chaos, one infant remains on a ventilator, while five others receive urgent medical attention at a nearby hospital. The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) swiftly dispatched nine fire trucks to the scene to combat the flames.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Surendra Choudhary provided insight into the rescue efforts, stating, “All the 12 newborn babies were rescued from the hospital with the help of other people and shifted to East Delhi Advance NICU Hospital in Vivek Vihar for treatment.” He further added, “Out of these babies, six were declared brought dead. All 7 dead bodies have been further shifted to GTB Hospital for postmortem.”
Reports indicate that the infants were trapped on the upper floors of the three-storey building as the fire rapidly spread, engulfing the entire structure. Atul Garg, Chief of the DFS, recounted the urgent response to the emergency, emphasizing the concerted efforts to save the infants.
Videos capturing the harrowing scene depict local residents rallying together to aid in the rescue mission. Brave individuals scaled grill bars and ladders, risking their lives to reach the upper floors and carry the vulnerable newborns to safety. While the fire did spread to adjacent buildings, prompt action from fire officials prevented further devastation.
Fire Officer Rajesh provided further details, stating, “At 11:32 pm, Fire Service Control Room received information that fire broke out at a hospital…fire tenders reached the spot and fire has been extinguished completely.” He added, “Two buildings were affected by the fire, one is the hospital building and two floors of a residential building on the right side also caught fire…11-12 people were rescued and they were taken to hospital.”
