Authorities in Chile have made a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the tragic blaze that claimed the lives of 137 people in the resort city of Viña del Mar back in February. A firefighter was arrested on Friday, May 24, under suspicion of igniting the devastating inferno.
Police director Eduardo Cerna announced the arrest during a news conference, revealing that an arrest warrant had been issued against the individual responsible for starting the fires in the Valparaiso region, where Viña del Mar is situated.
The deadly blaze erupted on February 2, with multiple fires erupting simultaneously around the coastal city of Viña del Mar, exacerbated by strong winds and scorching temperatures reaching around 40°C (104°F).
According to local reports, the arrested firefighter is a 22-year-old man who had joined the volunteer force just a year and a half ago. Vicente Maggiolo, commander of the 13th Fire Company of the city of Valparaiso, expressed profound dismay over the incident, emphasizing that such actions were entirely unacceptable.
Investigators from the Public Ministry determined that the fire originated from small simultaneous blazes near Lake Penuelas, adjacent to Viña del Mar. Prosecutors noted the presence of materials used to start the fire at the suspect’s residence and are exploring potential connections to other incidents of arson. The motive behind the suspect’s actions remains unclear.
Viña del Mar Mayor Macarena Ripamonti expressed certainty that the fire was intentionally set, echoing the sentiments of many in the community. Interior Minister Carolina Toha emphasized the importance of justice and restitution for the victims and their families, acknowledging the profound impact of the disaster on the affected individuals and the wider community.
