Singapore Airlines Adapts Safety Measures After Turbulence Tragedy

Singapore: Following a turbulence incident that resulted in one fatality and numerous injuries, Singapore Airlines has announced adjustments to its in-flight seatbelt sign policies and flight routes. The airline disclosed that it will adopt a more cautious approach to turbulence, including refraining from serving hot drinks or meals when the seat belt sign is illuminated.

In a statement to Singapore broadcaster Channel News Asia, Singapore Airlines emphasized its commitment to passenger and crew safety, stating, “SIA will continue to review our processes, as the safety of our passengers and crew is of utmost importance.” However, the airline did not respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The turbulence incident occurred on SQ321, the London to Singapore route, operated by a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. The flight, carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew members, was forced to divert to Bangkok for an emergency landing after encountering severe turbulence. Passengers and crew were reportedly thrown around the cabin, resulting in injuries and one passenger’s death due to a suspected heart attack.

In response to the incident, Singapore Airlines has rerouted subsequent flights, avoiding the area in Myanmar where the turbulence occurred. Instead, flights have been directed over the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, as indicated by route data from flight tracker FlightRadar24.

Photographs from inside the aircraft depicted significant damage, including gashes in overhead cabin panels, dislodged oxygen masks, and scattered luggage. Witnesses described passengers sustaining injuries, with some individuals’ heads hitting the ceiling panels above their seats.
