In a move likely to ignite diplomatic tensions, Ireland has officially announced its recognition of the State of Palestine, joining Norway in a decision that Israel vehemently opposes. The decision, announced by Ireland’s coalition government, marks a significant shift in Ireland’s foreign policy stance. Taoiseach Simon Harris, Tánaiste Micheál Martin, and Green Party Minister Eamon Ryan collectively declared the decision during a press conference at Government buildings in Dublin on Wednesday morning.
“It is an important and historic day for Ireland and for Palestine,” stated Taoiseach Simon Harris, emphasizing the significance of the move.
However, Israel responded swiftly, issuing an “immediate recall” of its ambassadors to Ireland and Norway. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz expressed Israel’s discontent, stating, “Israel will not remain silent in the face of those undermining its sovereignty and endangering its security.”
Katz condemned the decision, linking it to recent acts of terrorism perpetrated by Hamas, including what he described as “the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.” He warned of “severe consequences” and hinted at similar actions against Spain, should it proceed with its intention to recognize Palestine.
This development comes amidst growing international support for Palestinian statehood. Norway and Spain have also announced their intentions to recognize Palestine on the same day. Notably, Sweden was the most recent European Union member state to extend recognition to Palestine in 2014.
The move by Ireland, Norway, and potentially Spain, underscores a broader push for a two-state solution in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Supporters argue that such a solution is the only viable path towards lasting peace and security in the region.
