Banska Bystrica: Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s health is steadily improving, according to doctors overseeing his recovery from an assassination attempt last week. The attack, a rare occurrence in European politics, has highlighted the deep-seated divisions within Slovak society.
In a statement posted on the hospital’s Facebook page following a medical board meeting, officials in Banska Bystrica confirmed Fico’s stable condition and noted positive progress. They reported that Fico is now able to communicate and that his inflammatory markers are gradually decreasing, indicating improvement. The Prime Minister continues to receive attentive care at the hospital.

Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak provided reassurance on Sunday, stating that while Fico’s life is no longer in immediate danger, his condition remains serious, necessitating continued treatment in Banska Bystrica rather than transfer to a hospital in the capital, Bratislava.
Meanwhile, Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok announced the establishment of an investigation team to probe the incident. Initial beliefs that the suspect acted alone are now under scrutiny, with authorities exploring the possibility of accomplices.

The suspect, identified as 71-year-old Juraj C., is a former security guard at a shopping mall and a published poet. Investigators are particularly interested in uncovering any connections the suspect may have had with others who could have influenced or supported the assassination attempt.
Suspicion of wider involvement arises from the deletion of the suspect’s internet communications shortly after the attack. However, authorities have determined that neither the suspect nor his wife likely carried out this deletion, prompting further investigation into potential accomplices.
