Bird Flu Detected in Western China Amid Concerns Over U.S. Cattle Outbreak

Beijing: The Ministry of Agriculture in China confirmed cases of bird flu among wild fowl in western regions of the country, while the United States grapples with an outbreak affecting cattle herds.

According to a notice posted on the ministry’s website, Qinghai province reported 275 cases of H5 influenza among deceased Pallas’s gulls and other wild birds in two counties. The report, originating from the China Animal Disease Control Center, was verified by the national Avian Influenza Reference Laboratory.

Meanwhile, the United States has been battling an H5N1 outbreak among dairy cattle across nine states since late March, raising concerns about the potential for transmission to humans. As of now, no human cases have been reported. In response to the outbreak, the U.S. government announced plans to allocate nearly $200 million towards containment efforts on May 11.

The revelation of bird flu cases in China coincides with an announcement from the nation’s anti-graft watchdog regarding a corruption investigation involving the agriculture minister on Saturday.
