Kyiv: Russian forces initiated an armored ground assault near Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, in the country’s northeast, marking a significant escalation and the opening of a new front in the ongoing conflict. Despite Ukraine’s efforts to reinforce its defenses, Russian troops made minor advancements, intensifying clashes along the region’s border areas.
Ukraine’s defense ministry reported that Russia targeted the frontier town of Vovchansk with guided aerial bombs and artillery strikes, exacerbating the already volatile situation. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy addressed the media in Kyiv, confirming the commencement of a new wave of counteroffensive actions by Russia and acknowledging the fierce battles unfolding in the region.
Concerns over a potential Russian offensive had been mounting, with Ukraine warning of a buildup of Russian forces in the area. President Zelenskiy hinted at the possibility of Moscow launching a major offensive push during the spring or summer months. While Ukrainian forces were prepared for the assault, there were apprehensions about potential reinforcements from Russia.

The defense ministry disclosed that Russian forces attempted to breach Ukraine’s defensive line under the cover of armored vehicles. Despite these efforts, Ukrainian troops successfully repelled the attacks, although sporadic battles persisted.
Oleh Synehubov, governor of the Kharkiv region, confirmed the heavy Russian shelling of border settlements, resulting in casualties among civilians. He described the situation as Russian forces testing Ukrainian military positions through targeted attacks.

In response to the escalating violence, authorities in Vovchansk facilitated the evacuation of civilians from the town and surrounding areas, prioritizing their safety amid the heavy bombardment.
The Kharkiv region had witnessed significant clashes in 2022, leading to the expulsion of Russian troops by Ukrainian forces. However, with Russian forces resuming their offensive operations and making territorial gains in the Donetsk region to the south, concerns over the Kremlin’s intentions in Kharkiv have intensified.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s call for the establishment of a buffer zone inside Ukrainian territory in March further fueled apprehensions. The region, due to its proximity to Russia, has been subjected to relentless airstrikes, resulting in significant damage to vital infrastructure.
