Warsaw: Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced plans to bolster the nation’s eastern border in response to what he describes as a mounting “hybrid war” fueled by illegal migration from Belarus. During his visit to the frontier, Tusk emphasized the urgency of enhancing security measures, affirming that there will be “no limits” when it comes to safeguarding Poland.
“The Polish-Belarusian border is facing unprecedented challenges due to the surge in illegal immigration. We are unequivocally confronting a burgeoning hybrid warfare scenario,” Tusk stated, addressing soldiers and guards stationed at the border.
Tusk refrained from divulging specific details regarding the proposed actions or the financial resources earmarked for the endeavor. However, he underscored the gravity of the situation, accusing Belarus of colluding in orchestrating the influx of migrants as a form of pressure tactic, echoing concerns voiced by the previous government and the European Union in 2021. Belarus, for its part, vehemently denies these allegations.

Despite the erection of a 180-kilometer-long, 5.5-meter-high fence along the Polish-Belarusian border by the previous administration, illegal crossing attempts persist, with approximately 300 incidents reported daily by Polish border guards. The ongoing tensions between Poland and Belarus have been exacerbated by Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine, further straining diplomatic relations between the neighboring countries.
In light of these developments, Tusk emphasized the need for comprehensive fortifications spanning the entirety of Poland’s eastern border, extending the focus beyond Belarus to potentially include Ukraine and Russia. Stressing that the border security is not solely Poland’s concern but also a matter of European Union’s collective security, Tusk called for increased investment in safeguarding the region.
