Buenos Aires: A collision between a seven-car passenger train, a locomotive, and an empty train car in Buenos Aires on Friday resulted in at least 60 injuries, according to local authorities. Details regarding the severity of the injuries were not disclosed.
Emergency responders, including firefighters, police, and ambulances, swiftly arrived at the scene to assist in evacuating individuals and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals.
Television footage and drone imagery captured the aftermath of the collision, with the trains situated head-to-head on an overpass in the Palermo neighborhood of the Argentine capital. The collision caused the first car of the passenger train to derail and sustain damage.

International news agency Reuters journalists present at the scene witnessed passengers being stretchered into ambulances, with helicopters on standby to airlift the most severely injured to city hospitals.

Alberto Crescenti, the head of the local emergency medical care system SAME, informed Reuters that “Ninety ambulances were used on the scene, 90 passengers were transferred and attended to, of which 30 were referred with (the most serious categorization) code red.” He further noted that two passengers were airlifted to Santojanni hospital due to head and thorax trauma, emphasizing that while lucid, they were transported as a precaution. In total, approximately 100 passengers received medical attention.

The state-run train operator Trenes Argentinos disclosed that the collision occurred at 10:31 a.m. (1331 GMT) and assured that an investigation into the cause of the accident would be initiated. The statement issued by the operator indicated that “So far, as reported by the health authorities present at the scene, there are at least 60 people with injuries of varying severity.” Additionally, services on the San Martin train line were suspended.
