New Delhi: As the mercury continues to soar, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe heatwave alert spanning various regions. Until May 5, intense heat is anticipated to persist over Gangetic West Bengal, coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Karnataka, Gujarat, parts of Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.
Additionally, the Peninsular region is expected to grapple with severe heatwave conditions until May 6.
In its latest update, the IMD cautioned, “Heatwave conditions are likely to persist over East India until the 5th and over south Peninsular India until the 6th of May, gradually subsiding thereafter.”
Current observations as of May 2, 2024, reveal that Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha are experiencing the brunt of the scorching temperatures. The Rayalseema region of Andhra Pradesh recorded the highest temperature at 46.2 degrees Celsius, closely followed by Palawancha in Telangana with a temperature of 45.3 degrees Celsius, as per IMD reports.

Meanwhile, the weather forecast also includes a glimmer of relief in the form of anticipated light rains. Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh are expected to witness light rainfall in the coming five days.
Further adding to the forecast, the IMD warned of significant rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in Northeast India on May 5th and 6th.
