Mount Ibu Erupts: Ash Column Reaches Heights of ±3500m

Mount Ibu experienced a volcanic eruption, sending an ash column soaring approximately ± 3500 meters above the peak (± 4825 meters above sea level). The ash, observed to be gray to black in color, exhibited thick intensity towards the west. This eruption event was captured on a seismograph, registering a maximum amplitude of 28 mm and lasting for 206 seconds.

In response to this volcanic activity, several safety recommendations have been issued:

  1. Restricted Activities: Residents residing around Mount Ibu and tourists planning visits are advised to refrain from engaging in activities within a 2.0 km radius of the volcano’s crater, with an extended sectoral distance of 3.5 km towards the northern crater opening.
  2. Protection Against Ashfall: Individuals participating in outdoor activities during ashfall events are encouraged to utilize nose and mouth protectors (masks) and eye protection (goggles) to minimize exposure to volcanic ash particles.
  3. Community Harmony: All stakeholders are urged to uphold community harmony and refrain from spreading false information (hoaxes). It is essential to rely on credible sources of information and adhere to guidance provided by local authorities.
  4. Government Coordination: The West Halmahera Regency Government is urged to collaborate with the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation in Bandung or the Mount Ibu Observation Post in Gam Ici to access real-time information regarding Mount Ibu’s volcanic activity.
