Mumbai: Bollywood divas Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor recently took their fans on a trip down memory lane by recreating their legendary dance-off from the iconic film ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’. The two actresses showcased their dance prowess on the popular TV reality show ‘Dance Deewane’, dancing to the instrumental of ‘Dance of Envy’.
A captivating video of Madhuri and Karisma’s performance was posted by Colors TV on social media platforms. In the video, Madhuri looked stunning in a vibrant yellow outfit, while Karisma dazzled in an elegant black saree. The duo’s mesmerizing performance was met with cheers from Suneil Shetty, one of the judges on the show.
Following their scintillating dance, Suneil Shetty remarked, “The greatest dancing stars of our industry and country. Tab bhi aap dono ke liye dil pagal tha, aaj bhi hai (Back then, people were mad for you two, and even today, they are mad for you).”
The video quickly garnered immense praise from fans of both Karisma and Madhuri. One fan commented, “Still the same energy (sic)”. Another fan wrote, “Seems like it was yesterday..they still look young omg… (sic)”. An Instagram user added, “Two OG legends together (sic)”. Many fans were also reminded of ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’, which also starred Shah Rukh Khan.
In Aditya Chopra’s film, Madhuri’s character Maya, a talented dancer, was pitted against Karisma’s Nisha. When offered the role, Karisma was hesitant to dance opposite Madhuri, often referred to as the ‘Dancing Queen’ of Bollywood.
During her appearance on the singing reality show ‘Indian Idol’ in 2021, Karisma revealed, “Every single heroine refused the film (Dil To Pagal Hai). The role came to me…it was a dance film and that too working opposite Madhuri Dixit. Everyone said, ‘No, how can we dance alongside Madhuri Dixit ji.’ Initially, I too said no to it as it was a dance film and competing in dance with Madhuri Dixit. I said, ‘This isn’t happening’.”
Karisma continued, “Then finally, Yash ji and Adi (Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra) narrated the story to me. My mother told me, ‘You must take up the challenge. You are a big fan of Madhuri Dixit, you must do it. You work hard and you will shine’.”
Consequently, Karisma accepted the role and was honored with the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1998.
