Lithuania Fortifies Border with 600 Kilometers of Defenses Along Belarus

Vilnius: Lithuania has completed a significant expansion of its border defenses, erecting 600 kilometers of fortifications along its border with Belarus in the past year, according to statements made by Minister of Internal Affairs Agne Bilotaite.

This development is part of Lithuania’s concerted efforts to bolster security and combat illegal activities, including migration and smuggling.

Strengthening Border Security

In an interview with Ukrinform, Minister Bilotaite outlined the swift construction of border infrastructure, now equipped with specialized technology and plans for the implementation of patrol roads. These roads will facilitate continuous surveillance by border guards utilizing specialized vehicles, enhancing Lithuania’s ability to monitor and secure its borders effectively.

“We erected our infrastructure in a relatively short timeframe – within a year. This spans over 600 km along the Belarusian border. We are now fully committed to thwarting illegal migration processes,” stated Bilotaite.

Closure of Border Checkpoints

The minister also noted the continued closure of four border checkpoints with Belarus, a measure instigated amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and as part of initiatives to curb illicit tobacco trade and enforce sanctions.

Stringent scrutiny at operational checkpoints has been enforced, with Lithuanian border guards meticulously inspecting each vehicle to prevent the entry of sanctioned goods. Vehicles bearing Russian license plates are prohibited from entering Lithuania.

Maritime Security Concerns

The security measures extend beyond land borders to the Baltic Sea, where Lithuania faces persistent threats from the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

“We are aware of the potential threats posed, given the actors involved,” remarked the minister.

“While we appreciate the support of the Alliance, we remain internally vigilant, preparing for potential threats.”

Despite the perceived risks, Bilotaite expressed confidence in the capabilities of the Lithuanian maritime border service.

“I am immensely proud of our maritime border service. They possess exceptional infrastructure and maintain constant communication with the Ministry of Defence. Our land and water borders are tightly secured,” affirmed Bilotaite.
