Beijing: China delivered a firm response on Wednesday to US warnings about its ties with Russia, declaring it would not tolerate “criticism or pressure” regarding its cooperation with Moscow.
Foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized, “China and Russia have the right to engage in normal economic and trade cooperation.” She added, “This kind of cooperation should not be interfered with… China also does not accept criticism or pressure.”
Amidst heightened tensions, US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell underscored the importance of maintaining peace in Europe. He cautioned that potential Russian territorial gains in Ukraine could disrupt the balance of power in Europe, calling it “unacceptable”.
“We have told China directly, if this continues, it will have an impact on the US-China relationship. We will not sit by and say everything is fine,” Campbell asserted.

He further stated that the US views Russian actions as a joint effort, supported by China and North Korea, contrary to their interests.
Campbell’s remarks came in response to questions about Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s recent visit to China, during which President Xi Jinping expressed readiness to enhance coordination.
Campbell revealed that the Biden administration had warned Chinese officials about intelligence indicating Russia’s intentions to invade Ukraine in February 2022. He noted that China initially worked to bolster Moscow’s defenses out of concern for regime change.
However, Campbell highlighted Russia’s transformation over the years, stating, “Russia has almost completely retooled, and they now pose a significant threat going forward.”
The US has repeatedly threatened sanctions if China provides more substantial support to Russia. US officials also allege that Russia is obtaining arms from North Korea and Iran to fuel its conflict in Ukraine, both countries facing extensive sanctions.
