India | Beware of WhatsApp Scams: Government Issues Alerts on Specific Numbers

New Delhi: In a world where every call seems just a tap away, caution is advised, especially when it comes to WhatsApp. The Government of India has recently raised a red flag concerning calls from certain numbers on the popular messaging platform, warning mobile users to stay vigilant.

The Ministry of Communications, acting through the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), has issued a stark advisory to citizens regarding incoming calls from specific numbers. According to the telecom ministry, unsuspecting individuals are being targeted by callers posing as DoT officials, who threaten them with the disconnection of their mobile numbers.

These fraudulent actors employ tactics reminiscent of cybercrimes involving the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), wherein scammers impersonate CBI officials and falsely assert that recipients’ numbers are linked to unlawful activities.

So, what numbers should you watch out for?

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has flagged WhatsApp calls originating from foreign mobile numbers, particularly those starting with +92-xxxxxxxxxx, as potential threats. These numbers, cloaked as government entities, aim to deceive individuals into divulging personal information, likely for use in cybercrimes or financial frauds.

In light of this, the Ministry emphasizes that the DoT does not endorse or authorize anyone to make such calls on its behalf. It urges people to exercise vigilance and refrain from sharing any sensitive information if they receive such calls.

How can you combat these scams and where should you report them?

For starters, users can utilize the ‘Chakshu-Report Suspected Fraud Communications’ facility available on the Sanchar Saathi portal (www.sancharsaathi.gov.in). By doing so, they contribute to the efforts of the DoT in curbing the misuse of telecom resources for cybercrimes and financial frauds.

Additionally, individuals can leverage the ‘Know Your Mobile Connections’ feature on the Sanchar Saathi portal to verify if any unauthorized connections are registered under their name. Any suspicious findings can be promptly reported.

In the unfortunate event of falling victim to cybercrime or financial fraud, prompt action is crucial. Victims can report such incidents by dialing the cybercrime helpline number 1930 or visiting www.cybercrime.gov.in for further assistance.

Stay informed, stay cautious, and combat these digital threats.
