Los Angeles: Film noir aficionados, rejoice! Colin Farrell takes center stage in “Sugar”, a gripping new Apple+ series set against the vibrant backdrop of contemporary Los Angeles, infusing the classic genre with a fresh burst of color and intrigue.
Portraying the role of John Sugar, a tormented private detective embroiled in a relentless pursuit to locate a missing Hollywood producer’s granddaughter, Farrell delves into the depths of his character’s psyche with characteristic finesse. For the Golden Globe Award winner, renowned for his stellar performance in “The Banshees of Inisherin”, delving into the world of film noir is nothing short of a dream realized.
“I do love film noir, and I have had a love for it that pre-dates this show, so there were certain tropes that I was well aware of,” remarked Farrell in an interview, reflecting on his deep-seated affinity for the genre.
Emerging in the 1940s and 1950s, film noir became synonymous with its distinctive visual style characterized by sharp shadows, morally ambiguous characters, and evocative settings enveloped in smoke and rain. Farrell, embodying the complex persona of John Sugar, confronts a case that unravels the very fabric of his existence, navigating a labyrinth of deceit and intrigue.

Premiering on Friday, “Sugar” masterfully juxtaposes the kaleidoscopic vistas of Los Angeles with scenes reminiscent of vintage Hollywood noir, immersing viewers in a world where darkness lurks beneath the surface. The series’ editing techniques, seamlessly interweaving moments of tension and introspection, leave both actors and audiences captivated.
British actor Kirby Howell-Baptiste, who portrays Sugar’s manager Ruby, expressed her fascination with the creative process behind the series. “I knew I was filming a noir but then once I’m done with my process, there’s a completely separate creative process that happens after,” she shared, marveling at the enigmatic allure of the final product.
Reflecting on the filming experience, Farrell reminisced about nights spent capturing car footage through the streets of downtown Los Angeles, underscored by cinematographer Cesar Charlone’s visionary lens. “There were moments where I was kind of honest-to-God pinching myself, going, ‘this is just unbelievable’ and ‘aren’t we so lucky?'” Farrell recalled, embodying the palpable excitement that permeated the set.
As “Sugar” unravels the mysteries of its noir-inspired narrative, Farrell’s portrayal promises to enthrall audiences, reaffirming his status as a versatile and compelling performer.
