Chennai, India: Tamil Nadu’s Erode MP A Ganeshamoorthy tragically passed away after a suicide attempt, according to a report by The Times of India. Ganeshamoorthy, who had consumed pesticide days earlier, succumbed to his condition at a private hospital in Coimbatore on Thursday morning. His family attributed his extreme step to the denial of a Lok Sabha ticket by the MDMK party for the upcoming elections.
Medical professionals at Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) pronounced him deceased at 5:05 am on Thursday. His body was subsequently transferred to the government hospital in Perundurai, Erode, for postmortem examination. Initial reports suggest that he suffered from a fatal cardiac arrest.
Ganeshamoorthy, a prominent figure in the MDMK, had previously contested and won the Erode parliamentary seat on the DMK’s rising sun symbol during the 2019 general elections. However, his exclusion from the party’s candidate list for the forthcoming polls reportedly left him in a state of depression.
The distressing turn of events unfolded when Ganeshamoorthy ingested pesticide at his Erode residence on Sunday, March 24. He was promptly rushed to a private hospital, where he received immediate medical attention before being transferred to KMCH. Despite efforts to save him, he passed away on Thursday morning.
Following the postmortem examination, Ganeshamoorthy’s remains will be handed over to his family. The Times of India reported that MDMK General Secretary Vaiko and other party leaders are slated to visit the late leader’s residence later today.
Vaiko, who had visited Ganeshamoorthy in the hospital on Sunday night, expressed regret over the situation. He disclosed that while the party had considered Ganeshamoorthy for the parliamentary elections, a poll revealed overwhelming support for another candidate. Vaiko conveyed that plans were in place to field Ganeshamoorthy in the upcoming assembly elections if he couldn’t contest in the parliamentary polls.
The tragic incident underscores the intense pressure and emotional strain often associated with political candidacy and party dynamics.
