UK Faces Potential Job Loss Crisis: Over 8 Million Jobs at Risk Due to AI, Warns Report

London: The United Kingdom is on the brink of a significant job crisis as businesses increasingly turn to artificial intelligence (AI) solutions, potentially displacing millions of workers.

A dire warning from the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) indicates that up to 8 million jobs in the UK are at risk of being lost due to AI implementation, should current government policies governing AI and employment remain unchanged.

The IPPR’s report reveals that AI is already impacting 11 percent of tasks performed by UK workers, a figure projected to skyrocket to nearly 60 percent as companies deepen their integration of AI technology.

Particularly vulnerable are part-time, entry-level, and back-office positions such as customer service, although higher-paying roles will also face increasing disruption.

These findings underscore the formidable challenges facing the government as it seeks to leverage AI to address the UK’s productivity challenges. Despite ambitions to boost efficiency through AI adoption, the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer has announced a significant £800 million investment in technology and AI to enhance public-sector productivity.

Carsten Jung, senior economist at IPPR, acknowledges AI’s transformative potential as a “game changer” for millions but warns of a potential “jobs apocalypse” without proactive intervention from government, employers, and unions.

The IPPR report underscores the crucial role of government policy in shaping the impact of AI adoption on the job market. With appropriate policies, AI could drive significant economic growth without causing job losses. However, without intervention, the UK could face the displacement of 8 million jobs with no corresponding economic benefits.

A separate study by LinkedIn highlights the UK’s lag in AI skills compared to other nations, emphasizing the urgent need for upskilling initiatives.

Janine Chamberlin, UK country manager for LinkedIn, stresses the necessity of investing in skills development to bridge the gap between existing skills and those demanded in the AI era.

The IPPR advocates for the formulation of an industrial AI strategy to facilitate job transitions and ensure equitable distribution of automation benefits. Proposed measures include fiscal incentives, regulatory adjustments, and support for green jobs less susceptible to automation.

As AI continues to reshape the workforce landscape, proactive measures at organizational and governmental levels are imperative to mitigate potential negative impacts and capitalize on the benefits of AI-driven innovation.
