In a spectacular takeover of Times Square, Colombian superstar Shakira thrilled thousands of fans with a surprise pop-up concert on Tuesday night (March 26), marking the countdown to her new album release.
The announcement of the impromptu concert sent waves of excitement through social media channels just hours before the event, drawing an estimated 40,000 enthusiastic fans to the iconic New York tourist destination. The occasion celebrated Shakira’s latest album, “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran,” her first LP in seven years, released just days prior.
As anticipation built, a massive electronic billboard adorned a skyscraper, displaying a countdown to the start of the free show. At approximately 7:30 p.m. ET, the crowd erupted in cheers as two large doors concealed within the jumbotron opened, revealing the TSX Stage, with Shakira kicking off the performance with her chart-topping hit, “Hips Don’t Lie.”
Addressing the thrilled audience in a mix of English and Spanish, Shakira expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support during the album release week. Dressed in a striking ensemble of black pants and top embellished with silver accents, the self-proclaimed She-Wolf delivered a dynamic live performance, accompanied by a band and dancers, captivating the audience with hits like “Te Felicito,” “TQM,” “Cómo Dónde y Cuándo,” and “Puntería,” before closing with “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.”
Expressing her joy at being surrounded by fellow Latinos, the 14-time Latin Grammy and three-time Grammy winner bid farewell to New York, promising to return soon. The event, co-produced by TSX Entertainment and presented by ViX, Vinfast, and Sony Music Latin, followed Shakira’s appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she performed “Puntería” and shared insights into her personal life, including her split from soccer star Gerard Piqué and the inspiration behind her new album.
With her electrifying performance, Shakira brought Times Square to life, leaving fans eagerly anticipating her next musical endeavor.
