In a shocking turn of events, a major bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, has collapsed into the Patapsco River after being struck by a container ship. Dramatic images captured in the aftermath reveal the extent of the devastation as vehicles and people are plunged into the water below

Video footage depicts the harrowing moment as the bridge breaks apart and descends rapidly into the river. Aerial shots of the scene show the container ship wedged amidst debris from the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge, a critical component of the city’s highway infrastructure stretching over 3 kilometers (1.6 miles).

Rescue teams are currently engaged in efforts to locate and assist individuals affected by the collapse. Authorities report that at least seven people are missing, with two individuals already rescued from the water. Sonar equipment has detected multiple vehicles submerged underwater, further complicating the rescue operation.

According to statements from the Baltimore City Fire Department, the ship collided with a bridge column around 01:30 ET (05:30 GMT), causing the catastrophic collapse. However, there is no indication that the collision was intentional.

In response to the unfolding crisis, Baltimore officials have sprung into action. Chief Wallace of the Baltimore City Fire Department described arriving at the scene to find a fully collapsed bridge and confirmed the rescue of two individuals, one of whom is in critical condition. Mayor Brandon Scott characterized the incident as an “unthinkable tragedy” and pledged full cooperation with all levels of government to address the situation.

Furthermore, authorities are investigating the possibility of an oil spill in the river as a result of the collision. Despite initial concerns, officials have stressed that there is no indication of terrorism involved in the incident.

As the rescue operation continues and investigations unfold, the port of Baltimore, the largest in the US for specialized cargo, remains a focal point of attention. The community remains on edge as they await further updates on the unfolding situation and the well-being of those affected by this devastating event.
